The Mayer Multiple, Explained: How 0.8 and 2.4 Define Cheap and Expensive Bitcoin
CryptoRebateHub Editorial Team
Price divided by the 200-day moving average — the simplest Bitcoin valuation anchor. How the historic <0.8 and >2.4 zones formed, why the thresholds drift, and its role inside the nine-indicator thermometer.
The Mayer Multiple is probably the easiest Bitcoin cycle indicator to understand: current price divided by the 200-day simple moving average. It answers one plain question — is today's price rich or cheap relative to the average of the past 200 days?
Where 0.8 and 2.4 came from
Trace Mayer backtested Bitcoin's full history and found two statistical clusters: readings below 0.8 almost all occurred near bear-market bottoms, while readings above 2.4 clustered around cycle tops. The peaks of 2013, 2017 and 2021 printed 5.6, 3.7 and 2.5 respectively — note the decay.
Why the thresholds drift
As market cap grows and institutions arrive, Bitcoin's volatility trends down, and the maximum stretch away from the 200-day average compresses. Waiting mechanically for 2.4 may mean never selling; waiting for 0.8 may mean never buying. A more robust approach is percentile ranking: where does today's multiple sit in the full historical distribution?
What it does well — and doesn't
It excels at flagging medium-term valuation extremes: the 200-day average is slow enough to filter noise, and the multiple is sensitive enough that genuine extremes register. It is poor at timing. The multiple can sit in the cheap zone for months (2015 and 2022 both did). It says "cheap", never "buy today".
Its role in the thermometer
The BTC Cycle Thermometer assigns the Mayer Multiple a 10% weight inside its trend-valuation group, alongside the 200-week moving average multiple. Any single indicator fails sometimes; nine cross-checking indicators rarely fail together. Watch Mayer's live reading and sub-score on the cycle dashboard.
Practical use
Treat it as a position dial, not a buy/sell button: scale up DCA below the 20th percentile, trim above the 80th, and cross-check with the bottom signals checklist. Never bet the whole stack on one line.
